Cameron Highlands Bypass Remains in Planning Phase Amid Flood Concerns
The Public Works Department says the Cameron Highlands bypass project is still in design studies, with no construction yet on the main road alignment.
The Ministry of Works acknowledged media reports about flash floods and landslides in Cameron Highlands and responded that the bypass scheme is still confined to design and assessment studies. The plan includes a new Tanah Rata Bypass and upgrades to FT59 between Tanah Rata and Kea Farm, as well as FT434 (Jalan Griddle). Flooding reported in Taman MARDI and Padang Awam occurred on secondary roads not part of the main alignment, while a small landslide on Jalan Tengkolok was cleared under routine maintenance duties.
Officials emphasized that physical construction will only start after all environmental, social, geotechnical and local approvals are secured. Consequently, they consider any claims tying the recent flood to construction activities to be unfounded.
