Can You Safely Use a USB-C Laptop Charger to Power Your Phone?

Using a USB-C laptop charger on a modern smartphone is generally safe because USB Power Delivery negotiates the appropriate power level.

Modern USB-C chargers operate under the USB Power Delivery standard, a communication protocol that ensures a device receives only the power it can safely use. When a laptop charger and a smartphone both support USB-PD, the phone negotiates the highest compatible voltage and current, so a high-wattage charger cannot over-charge or fry the device. If either side lacks PD support, the charger typically falls back to a safe 5 V output, resulting in slower charging but no harm.

Faster charging is possible only if the phone’s fast-charging circuitry can accept higher voltages that the charger can provide. However, low-quality or counterfeit chargers and non-certified cables may bypass essential safety barriers, posing a risk of voltage spikes. Users should look for safety certifications such as UL, ETL, or the CE mark before using third-party accessories. While most recent phones and laptops from major brands are compatible, sticking with the original charger is advisable for older or obscure devices.
