Canada adopts polygon-based tornado and thunderstorm alerts to curb false warnings

Environment and Climate Change Canada introduced the Convective Alert Modernization (CAM) system, enabling meteorologists to issue tornado and severe thunderstorm warnings for specific, meteorologically defined polygons rather than large pre-set zones. This precision aims to limit unnecessary alerts that can lead to public desensitization, a concern voiced by Kenora’s emergency services director. The new alerts will be delivered via mobile networks and the WeatherCAN app, with traditional broadcast still using the legacy system due to its wide coverage.

Researchers familiar with the U.S. version say it has already cut down on false alarms, and Canadian officials expect similar benefits. Recent summer warnings in northwestern Ontario highlighted the need for more accurate targeting, as storms sometimes affect only sparsely populated areas.
