Canadian officials warned citizens to avoid unregulated drinks in Nigeria after methanol poisoning caused deaths and injuries.
Canada issued a travel advisory urging its citizens to refrain from drinking unregulated alcohol while in Nigeria, after reports of methanol poisoning. Nigerian health authorities said a large number of people died and around 180 were receiving treatment in Ondo state following consumption of a locally produced drink believed to contain methanol. Victims experienced severe symptoms such as vision loss and organ failure, according to the state health commissioner.
Local police have detained individuals connected to the production of the tainted beverage. The advisory stresses buying alcohol only from trusted establishments and seeking medical help if symptoms appear.
