Canada and Brazil vie for Olympic spots at FIBA pre-qualifier in Guadalajara

At the FIBA Pre-Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Guadalajara, Canada beat Senegal while Brazil split games against South Sudan and New Zealand.

Eight women's national teams are battling in Guadalajara, Mexico, for the first step toward the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. Canada, seen as the Group B favorite, started strong with a 72-57 triumph over Senegal and will face the Philippines later this week. Brazil, playing in Group A, suffered a 63-61 defeat to South Sudan before edging New Zealand 56-53 in a must-win encounter.

Guard Guyton led Brazil with 20 points in the loss and 18 points in the win, while forward Vasconcelos contributed rebounds and limited scoring. All four Group A teams are tied at three points each, each with one match remaining, and the top two from each group move on to Saturday's semifinals, culminating in a final on Sunday.

The tournament decides which teams advance toward qualifying for the 2028 Olympic women's basketball competition.
