Ottawa has granted fast-track priority status to the Tilbury LNG expansion, a project owned by FortisBC in Delta, British Columbia. The designation enables the first phase of the expansion to begin construction as early as mid-2027, with operations slated for early 2031, while a second, larger phase will add a high-capacity storage tank and is aimed for completion by 2035. The upgrade will dramatically increase the terminal’s ability to supply LNG as marine fuel, supporting cleaner shipping at Vancouver’s port.
The move aligns with Canada’s broader strategy to speed up LNG development to meet growing demand from Asian markets and Europe’s desire to diversify away from U.S. supplies. The project proceeds under the federal “One Project, One Review” program, which streamlines approvals for nation-building initiatives.
