Canada orders deportation of Toronto resident linked to Iran sanctions-evasion network

The Immigration and Refugee Board has issued a deportation order against Amin Yousefijam, a former Tehran police lieutenant living in Toronto, for his key role in a group that helped Iran bypass Canadian and U.S. sanctions.

A 36-page ruling from the Immigration and Refugee Board concluded that Amin Yousefijam, a former Tehran police lieutenant now residing in Toronto, played an essential logistical role in a transnational network that exported dual-use goods to Iran, violating Canadian and U.S. sanctions. The board highlighted his involvement in arranging shipments, including the use of “cross stuffing” via the United Arab Emirates, and criticized his false declaration on a provincial name-change application.

Yousefijam, who has used at least three different names since arriving in Canada in 2016, was previously extradited to Michigan, pleaded guilty, and was later deported to Ontario. He declined to discuss any appeal, stating the matter is ongoing. The order arrives amid heightened Canadian actions to expel Iranian regime members, with dozens of investigations and several deportations already underway.

Why it matters

The case underscores Canada's crackdown on individuals aiding Iran's sanctions-busting activities and its broader effort to curb regime influence.
