Canada's GDP jumps 3.3% in Q2, ending six-month stagnation
Canada's economy expanded at an annualized 3.3% rate in the second quarter, driven by a surge in exports and solid domestic demand.
Statistics Canada reported that the nation's output grew 3.3% year-over-year in the second quarter, a sharp rebound after half a year of near-zero growth. The rise follows a revised 0.3% increase in the first quarter, which had previously been shown as a slight contraction. Strong export performance and robust consumer spending were cited as the main contributors. With the first-quarter revision, Canada avoided the technical definition of a recession, which requires two consecutive quarters of decline.
Why it matters
The growth signals a turnaround for Canada's economy, affecting jobs, investment and consumer confidence.
