Canada selects transatlantic drama Nina Roza for Oscar International Feature race

Canada announced that the transnational drama Nina Roza will represent the country in the Best International Feature Film competition at the 99th Oscars. The movie, produced jointly by Canada, Belgium, Bulgaria and Italy, was created by writer-director Geneviève Dulude-De Celles and premiered at the Berlin festival, earning a Silver Bear for its screenplay. The plot centers on Mihail, a Bulgarian art expert who returns after thirty years to authenticate the paintings of an eight-year-old artist, Nina, whose work has gone viral online.

The director thanked collaborators from Quebec, Canada, Bulgaria, Italy and Belgium, while the production credits include Colonelle Films and partners such as UMI Films, Ginger Light, PREMIERstudio and Echo Bravo. The film has already screened at festivals in Namur and AFI Fest and opened in Quebec theatres in April 2026. The Academy will reveal the shortlist on Dec. 15, with final nominees due on Jan. 21, 2027, and the ceremony scheduled for March 14, 2027.
