Anita Anand, Canada's Foreign Affairs Minister, confirmed that a Canadian citizen or permanent resident missing after the catastrophic flooding in Nepal's border region with China has been located safe, after communication lines were restored on Tuesday. The disaster was triggered by a glacier collapse that caused flash flooding a week ago, resulting in more than 1,100 deaths and over 3,900 missing persons. Nepal's Foreign Ministry estimates roughly 590 foreign nationals from 39 nations are still unaccounted for.
In response, Canada will dispatch over 18,000 emergency items from Canadian Red Cross stockpiles and has already committed $5 million in humanitarian assistance. The aid effort aims to support relief operations in the severely affected Himalayan area.
