Canadian skyrunner Kalie McCrystal missing during Matterhorn record attempt
Kalie McCrystal, a Canadian skyrunner, has been missing on the Italian side of the Matterhorn since September 1 while trying to beat a sub-five-hour ascent-descent record.
The athlete was last seen in a photo taken on Tuesday near the Refuge Jean-Antoine Carrel Hut at almost 4,000 meters, wearing shorts, a jacket and a trail-running pack. Rescuers launched a search on Thursday, employing a helicopter to scan the area. Officials noted that her white clothing makes visual detection difficult. The mission continues as authorities seek any sign of her whereabouts.
Why it matters
The disappearance highlights the dangers of extreme mountain sports and the challenges of rescue operations at high altitude.
