Canberra Man Charged with Murder and Arson After Police Link Him to Fatal Fire

A police statement of facts outlines how 27-year-old Jack Henry Curtin is accused of murdering 46-year-old Kylee McHugh and then igniting her Belconnen residence. Investigators uncovered a series of texts between McHugh and a number believed to belong to Curtin, in which they argued over alleged cannabis theft. CCTV captured Curtin near the apartment on May 17 and again early on May 18, shortly before the fire broke out.

Telecommunication data placed a phone associated with Curtin in the area, later recovered by the public and seized by police, while DNA from Curtin could not be excluded from samples taken from McHugh’s remains. Firefighters reported multiple points of ignition with signs of accelerant use. In July, an undercover operation allegedly secured statements from Curtin about the crime, but he made no formal admissions at his arrest and has been remanded without bail, with the case set to return to court next month.
