Susy Aponte Polo, running for governor of Ancash, was killed on camera while campaigning for upcoming municipal and regional elections.
Susy Aponte Polo, a 43-year-old candidate for the governorship of Peru’s Ancash region, was assassinated during a televised interview at a municipal market. An assailant breached her security detail and fired a fatal shot to the head, an event that was later aired on national television, causing widespread alarm. Aponte Polo had warned authorities of death threats a week earlier and was probing alleged corruption among public officials, police officers, organized crime networks, and illegal mining operations.
Police quickly detained a Venezuelan contract killer, who admitted being hired by an unidentified patron. Investigators have affirmed the killing was politically motivated, and the probe continues. Analyst Enrique Castillo described the act as evidence of a climate of impunity that enables such brazen attacks.
