Canonical phases out legacy Ubuntu chat services, moving users to Matrix

Canonical has begun dismantling several of its older community communication tools. After the Ubuntu Pastebin was taken offline at the end of June, a follow-up notice revealed that the project's IRC channels will lose official status and be superseded by Matrix. Users can access the new Ubuntu Matrix space via a provided link or by typing /join #community:ubuntu.com in a Matrix client.

While the IRC servers hosted on Libera Chat remain operational for now, Canonical staff will no longer provide support or moderation there. The Ubuntu Wiki still lists the IRC channels, but they are no longer endorsed. This migration follows a pattern seen in other open-source projects, such as Linux Mint’s earlier move away from legacy chat services.
