Capcom outlines plan to weave AI into future game development

At its Open Conference RE:2026, Capcom programmer Satoshi Ishida said the company will gradually turn its RE Engine into an AI-enhanced tool to speed up production.

Capcom used its RE:2026 Open Conference to reveal a strategic shift toward artificial-intelligence assistance in game creation. Programmer Satoshi Ishida presented a session on the future of the REX Project and the evolution of the RE Engine, highlighting the labor-intensive nature of developing blockbuster franchises such as Resident Evil. He argued that embedding AI tools into development pipelines could alleviate time-consuming processes.

The company maintains its stance against directly inserting AI-generated art into released titles, but plans to incrementally transform the engine into an "AI-generation game engine" that works alongside developers. This approach aims to boost efficiency without compromising creative control. The initiative reflects Capcom’s broader effort to stay competitive as AI technologies become more prevalent in the industry.

Why it matters

Capcom’s AI integration plan could reshape how major video games are built, influencing industry standards and development costs.
