Captain of Misje Verde denies negligence as prosecutor seeks manslaughter charges

The captain of the cargo ship Misje Verde says he would have noticed any impact and rejects the prosecutor's negligence allegations.

The vessel’s captain, with three decades at sea and a pilot’s licence, told investigators he would detect any collision, even while sleeping. After a call from the Swedish Coast Guard around 23:20, he initially doubted the warning but later anchored the ship following a request from the shipowner. Prosecutors are charging him, alongside a pilot, with causing death and bodily injury, but both deny any wrongdoing.

Why it matters

It shows how authorities are holding ship captains accountable for possible collisions and safety lapses at sea.
