Captain of the Fitburg vessel to explain alleged cable damage in Helsinki court
The Russian captain of the cargo ship Fitburg and its Azerbaijani crew member will deny accusations of sabotaging Finnish telecom cables at a Helsinki district court hearing.
Investigators allege that the Fitburg bulk carrier, en route from St. Petersburg to Israel, caused damage to major Finnish telecommunications cables by dragging its anchor along the seabed for an extended distance. Finnish authorities noted the incident occurred in the early hours of a late-December night, prompting a border guard observation that the anchor was down. After the ship was finally halted, the crew claimed the anchor was stuck in ice and mud and would be cleaned later at sea. The captain, Andrei Maksimenko, 57, and a 48-year-old Azerbaijani crew member will appear before the Helsinki district court on Monday to refute the alleged sabotage and related charges.
