Car bomb in Zacatecas injures 11, highlights surge in cartel explosives
A car bomb exploded outside a police station in Zacatecas, wounding at least 11 people, as Mexican officials note a rise in gang bombings.
On Sunday, a suspected car bomb detonated near the police headquarters in Ojocaliente, central Zacatecas, causing extensive damage to about 40 structures and injuring at least 11 people, two of whom are police officers. Governor David Monreal attributed the strike to a criminal group responding to the capture of one of its members the previous day. He said similar attacks, including those using mini drones and landmines, have become more common across Mexico.
State security head Arturo Medina reported that only one such incident occurred in 2024, six in 2025, and ten so far this year. Other states such as Michoacan have experienced comparable bombings targeting security facilities and communities. The federal government has not issued a comment.
