Car bomb kills former Russian prison official linked to Ukraine POW torture in Tula

A car bomb detonated under a vehicle in Novomoskovsk, Tula region, killing Roman Syromyatnikov, a former prison official accused of torturing Ukrainian POWs.

A car bomb exploded under a vehicle in Novomoskovsk, Tula region, on October 2, killing Roman Syromyatnikov. He had served in Russia’s Federal Penitentiary Service facilities during the 2010s and later joined the Defense Ministry in 2023, returning to Tula for medical treatment in late 2024. Ukrainian authorities accuse Syromyatnikov of torturing Ukrainian prisoners of war held at Penal Colony No. 1 in 2022, a claim he previously denied.

The blast was first reported by the Ukrainian monitoring Telegram channel Exilenova+ and. Anonymous Russian Telegram channel VChK-OGPU provided details that the device was planted under the car’s chassis. Investigative outlet iStories cited leaked data to trace Syromyatnikov’s employment history, though it could not independently verify his 2022 FSIN role.
