Caracal mayor Ion Doldurea steps down due to health issues from traffic crash

Ion Doldurea announced his resignation as mayor of Caracal, saying lingering medical problems from a six-month-old road accident prevent him from fulfilling his duties.

Caracal’s mayor, Ion Doldurea, posted on Facebook that he is resigning because ongoing health complications from a traffic collision six months ago make it impossible to serve at full capacity. The accident, in which a truck struck his car on the way to Bucharest, required emergency brain surgery to extract a clot. Medical counsel has consistently warned him against stress, fatigue and intense effort, leading to his departure from office.

He named vice-mayor Laurențiu Pătran, a long-time collaborator, as his successor and pledged to remain available for counsel. Doldurea, a former chemical engineer and businessman in the LPG sector, entered politics with PSD in 2019 and secured the mayoralty in 2020 with roughly 52.7% of the vote. His tenure has attracted EU and national funding for local projects. The Doldurea family name was previously highlighted in connection with the August 2023 Crevedia LPG plant explosion, for which Ionuț Doldurea and Cosmin Stîngă faced legal proceedings.

Why it matters

The resignation triggers a leadership change in Caracal and highlights the impact of personal health on public office.
