Care home Covid inquiry report must pinpoint decision-makers responsible for high death toll

Bereaved families demand the upcoming care-sector report of the UK Covid-19 Inquiry identify who made the decisions that led to thousands of deaths in care homes.

The UK Covid-19 Inquiry is set to publish its sixth report, titled the ‘Care Sector’, which will examine how decisions during the pandemic affected care homes. Representatives of Covid19 Bereaved Families for Justice UK insist the findings must identify the individuals or bodies responsible for policies that contributed to a high death count in these facilities. They argue that pinpointing accountability is essential to prevent a repeat of the systemic failures that left the sector under-prepared.

The inquiry, led by Baroness Heather Hallett, has previously labeled government inaction as "inexcusable" and documented more than 43,000 deaths linked to the virus in care homes from March 2020 to July 2022. Testimony highlighted early hospital discharges without testing or isolation protocols, insufficient personal protective equipment, and restrictive visitation rules. The final comprehensive report is expected by mid-2027.

Why it matters

Identifying who made pandemic care-home decisions is crucial for accountability and future protection of vulnerable residents.
