CROSS-SPECTRUM

Care home deputy manager stripped vulnerable 99-year-old of £370,000 and was struck off

Rebecca Louise Burwood, a deputy manager at Bryn Yr Haul Care Home, was removed from the nursing register after unlawfully taking £370,000 from a vulnerable 99-year-old resident.

While serving as deputy manager at Bryn Yr Haul Care Home in Mold, Rebecca Louise Burwood manipulated a 99-year-old resident who had become vulnerable after a fall. She arranged for the woman to sign over her house and grant a lasting power of attorney, then extracted £370,000 over five years, spending it on cosmetic procedures, a vehicle, a campervan and property improvements. The tribunal heard evidence of coercion, emotional blackmail and false claims about charitable donations.

Although North Wales Police halted their investigation when the resident refused to complain, the Nursing and Midwifery Council concluded Burwood’s actions constituted serious misconduct and issued a striking-off order, barring her from nursing practice. The resident later died, leaving insufficient funds for her care.
