Carer sentenced to three years for stealing £8,000 of jewellery from vulnerable client

Lara Jones, a 50-year-old carer, was convicted of burglary after hidden cameras captured her stealing £8,000 of jewellery from an elderly client in Oxted, Surrey, and was sentenced to three years in prison.

After the family of an elderly man in Oxted, Surrey, noticed missing jewellery, they placed covert cameras in the bedroom. Footage from 26 November 2025 showed 50-year-old carer Lara Jones searching the client’s drawers and wardrobe, ultimately stealing items valued at £8,000. Jones was arrested on suspicion of burglary, and the stolen goods were recovered during a search.

At Guildford Crown Court on 9 October, she was convicted on three burglary counts and sentenced to three years’ imprisonment and a £228 victim surcharge. The victim’s daughter thanked Surrey Police and the Crown Prosecution Service for their diligence. Detective Constable Jen Trudel said the case highlighted the deep breach of trust and the family’s lingering wariness of home-care providers.
