Carlsberg Britvic proposes shutting Marston's Burton brewery and logistics hub

Carlsberg Britvic announced plans to close Marston's Brewery and its main logistics centre in Burton-upon-Trent next summer, citing a steep drop in UK cask ale sales.

Carlsberg Britvic revealed a proposal to cease operations at Marston's Brewery and its associated logistics facility in Burton-upon-Trent by the coming summer, marking a major shift for a town famed as England's "beer capital." The decision follows a sharp decline in UK cask ale consumption, which has more than halved in less than a decade and appears set to continue. While flagship brands like Hobgoblin, McEwan's and Brooklyn will remain under the company's umbrella, the exact sites for their production have not yet been determined.

Paul Davies, chief executive, stressed that the closure is not a judgment on the workforce and pledged assistance throughout the consultation period. He added that the firm aims to focus its portfolio on growing consumer demand while seeking specialist or local owners for smaller ale brands. The move follows previous regional restructurings, such as Banks's Brewery relocating production from Wolverhampton to Burton in 2025.

Why it matters

The closure threatens jobs and alters the historic brewing landscape of Burton-upon-Trent.
