Carpenter Stops Oregon School Shooter, Killing Suspect After Four Fatalities

Kaylub Giamanco, a carpenter and father, entered Silver Rail Elementary in Bend after hearing gunshots and fatally shot the 16-year-old shooter, ending an attack that left four dead.

Kaylub Giamanco, a 36-year-old carpenter and father of two girls enrolled at Silver Rail Elementary, was driving home for a lunch break when he heard gunshots outside the Bend, Oregon school. He followed the gunman into the school's special-education room and, according to police, shot the 16-year-old attacker, John J. Griffin, killing him. Griffin had already taken the lives of three children aged 5, 8 and 11, as well as a teacher, and wounded two others, including a 7-year-old student and a 54-year-old teacher now in critical condition.

Governor Tina Kotek thanked Giamanco for his heroic intervention, acknowledging the heavy emotional burden he bears. Giamanco’s brother Kyle said the father is avoiding publicity and feels guilty for not saving more lives, while their mother Kenda expressed pride in his quick thinking. Despite widespread praise, Giamanco has indicated he does not seek recognition and wishes to thank first responders and the community.
