Carrefour pulls Simpl canned tomatoes after discovery of toxic Datura contamination
Carrefour has started a recall of its Simpl brand whole peeled tomatoes because some cans were found to contain the poisonous plant Datura.
A recall has been launched for Simpl brand whole peeled tomatoes sold by Carrefour after tests revealed contamination with Datura, a highly toxic plant. The affected items are 800-gram cans identified by barcode 3560070479467, and they were distributed across France before the recall began. The government recall portal Rappel conso has instructed shoppers to discard any such cans and to claim a refund in store.
The Ministry of Agriculture explained that Datura contains alkaloids that can trigger severe symptoms such as dry mouth, dilated pupils, visual disturbances, rapid heartbeat, agitation, confusion, hallucinations and incoherent speech, even in very small doses. Poisoning may last from several hours up to a few days, depending on severity. Carrefour is cooperating with authorities to remove the product from the market and to compensate affected customers.
