CAS to hear Senegal's challenge to CAF's decision awarding AFCON title to Morocco
Senegal's appeal against CAF's ruling that crowns Morocco as AFCON champions will be heard by the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne will convene a three-person panel to review Senegal’s challenge to CAF’s decision that awarded the Africa Cup of Nations title to Morocco. Senegal had originally won the final 1-0 after extra time, but CAF’s Appeal Board later ruled the team forfeited the match after a 14-minute walk-off, granting a 3-0 win to Morocco. The panel, chaired by Gerald Simon with Luigi Fumagalli and Ulrich Haas as advisors, will hear arguments from Senegal, Morocco and CAF.
Central to the case are the tournament rules that deem a team that leaves the field without referee authorization as the loser, and whether Senegal’s temporary departure qualifies as abandonment. The hearing will be held behind closed doors, and a decision date has not been set.
Why it matters
The outcome could reshape the official record of Africa's premier football tournament and set precedent for future disciplinary actions.
