Catalan left parties pull Senate lists in Girona, Tarragona and Lleida to back PSC candidates

Los Comuns and the PSC have agreed that Los Comuns will withdraw their Senate candidate lists in Girona, Tarragona and Lleida, supporting PSC nominees and securing a senator appointed by the Catalan Parliament for Ada Colau’s platform.

A fresh coordination agreement between Los Comuns and the PSC mirrors the broader Frente Amplio-PSOE alliance for Senate contests and now includes Catalonia. Under the pact, Los Comuns will withdraw its candidate slates in Girona, Tarragona and Lleida, throwing its support behind the PSC’s Senate nominees. In exchange, the Ada Colau-led formation is guaranteed a seat appointed by the Catalan Parliament.

The arrangement seeks to prevent fragmentation of left-wing votes in the upper chamber, which elects four senators per province via open lists and has traditionally seen the leading party’s three candidates win alongside the runner-up’s top candidate. Both parties denounced a recent PP-Vox agreement that would let Vox assume leadership in Catalan constituencies, warning it threatens Catalan institutions and autonomy. The coalition builds on earlier collaborations that included PSC, ICV, ERC and IU under the Entesa Catalana de Progrés, which previously secured three senatorial seats per province in the 2000, 2004 and 2008 elections.

Why it matters

The pact aims to keep the left vote united in the Senate and limit right-wing influence in Catalonia.
