Catalonia launches new housing fund to buy homes at risk of eviction

Catalonia's government announced a new fund to purchase properties where tenants face imminent eviction, aiming to protect vulnerable families.

In a speech opening the parliamentary debate on general policy, President Salvador Illa unveiled a housing-emergency fund that will enable the Generalitat to buy apartments threatened with eviction and rent them to families under more affordable terms. He also introduced a joint-purchase program targeting people aged 40 to 55, or over 56, who earn steady incomes yet struggle to obtain mortgages; the government would purchase 50-60 % of the home, with the right to buy the remaining share later at market price.

These schemes complement existing tools like emancipation loans for those aged 18 to 40 buying their first home. Illa highlighted progress on a prior affordable-housing construction plan, noting several thousand units completed and thousands more slated for municipal partnership. He called on all parliamentary groups to support related central-government decrees in the national congress.

Why it matters

The initiative aims to reduce housing insecurity for vulnerable Catalan residents by directly intervening in eviction cases.
