Catalonia sees steepest drop in rental housing stock since Sánchez took office
Data from Idealista show that rental listings in Catalonia have fallen by 71% since 2018, the sharpest percentage decline among Spain’s regions.
According to Idealista, rental listings across Spain have contracted sharply since 2018, with Catalonia experiencing a 71% drop, the highest percentage loss nationwide. The region ranks second in sheer number of units lost, behind the Community of Madrid, which saw a 54% decline. At the provincial level, both Madrid and Barcelona lead the fall, with Madrid’s ads falling from 252,442 to 115,031 and Barcelona’s from 155,719 to 39,568.
Within the Barcelona province, the capital city’s rental market contracted from 113,853 listings to just 19,723, an 82.7% reduction. These trends emerge amid a broader housing crisis that could influence upcoming electoral debates.
Why it matters
The sharp fall in rental housing limits options for tenants and may shape voter concerns ahead of elections.
