Category 3 Hurricane Polo heads toward Baja California Sur landfall on Monday

On Sunday morning the National Hurricane Center classified Polo as a Category 3 hurricane with sustained winds of 120 mph, positioned roughly 285 miles west-southwest of Cabo San Lucas. The system is tracking north-northwest at about 10 mph toward the Baja California Peninsula, where extensive hurricane warnings have been issued for both the west and east coasts of Baja California Sur. Additional tropical storm watches cover portions of the peninsula and mainland Mexico, including areas from Huatabampito to Bahia Kino.

Residents have been advised to finalize protective actions for life and property ahead of the anticipated Monday afternoon landfall. The storm is projected to deliver between four and eight inches of rain, with isolated peaks of ten inches, potentially triggering life-threatening flooding and mudslides. After crossing the peninsula, Polo is expected to weaken to a tropical storm and later to a depression as it moves into the United States by late Tuesday.
