Category 5 Hurricane Polo roars off Mexico’s Pacific coast, prompting evacuations and port closures
Hurricane Polo has intensified to Category 5, with maximum sustained winds of 175 mph, and is situated roughly 215 miles south of Zihuatanejo. President Claudia Sheinbaum said a direct landfall is unlikely, but the storm’s hurricane‑force winds extend up to 40 miles from its eye. The Mexican navy has shut ports in Guerrero and Michoacán and schools have been suspended in coastal districts, while heavy rain is expected to bring flash‑flood and mudslide threats to Guerrero, Michoacán, Colima and surrounding areas.
Moisture from the system also poses a rain risk for the U.S. Southwest. Another nearby system, Odalys, has also reached hurricane status.
