Catholic bishops lament White House photo of prayer with Donald Trump
Two Catholic bishops said they regret attending a White House meeting that resulted in a publicly released photo of them praying with Donald Trump.
Archbishop Jeffrey Grob of Milwaukee issued a public apology after the meeting was quickly publicized with photos and video, which he said were shared without the participants' consent. He noted that the exposure came only 12 days before the midterm elections and sparked a wave of comments, some of them upset. Bishop William Joensen of Des Moines released a similar statement, accusing the White House of exploiting the bishops for political purposes.
Why it matters
The episode shows how political events can involve religious leaders without their consent, raising concerns about image use before elections.
