Catholic historian warns Christian voters of blind devotion to Trump

Catholic historian Henry Karlson issued a warning to fellow believers, asserting that a significant number of American Christians have been manipulated into following Donald Trump without question. He describes this obedience as antithetical to Christian conscience and the principle of law serving the common good rather than a single individual's desires. Karlson critiques the ideology of Christian nationalism, stating it elevates national identity to an idol, which undermines authentic faith.

Citing Walter Wink, he argues that such nationalism cannot accommodate a higher moral authority and therefore erodes true Christian practice. He calls for a restrained, "limited love" for the country, insisting that Christians must reject policies they deem evil, even when promoted by national leaders. Karlson also stresses that Christians should care for societal injustices regardless of personal impact, warning that indifference mirrors biblical examples of moral failure.
