Caucasian Mafia chief Yanis Yushvaev killed in gas-station shooting in Caesarea

Yanis Yushvaev, the reputed leader of Israel's Caucasian Mafia, was shot dead outside a Caesarea gas station, with surveillance footage showing a masked assailant in a gray hoodie and baseball cap firing from behind at close range. Emergency responders found Yushvaev without a pulse and pronounced him dead on the scene. Authorities believe the killer may have used a silicone mask to evade detection.

Yushvaev, described by police as heading a criminal gang involved in blood feuds, had previously survived an assassination attempt ten years earlier and had been arrested multiple times for alleged shootings, grenade attacks, and arson, though he never faced conviction. Six months before his death, he was detained at Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion airport after returning from Moscow on intelligence that he was planning violence against rivals.

Earlier arrests in 2025 for alleged shootings in Or Akiva also ended without charges. The murder underscores the challenges law enforcement faces in prosecuting high-profile organized-crime figures in Israel.
