CBI arrests MIL executive and SMPP CEO over defence information leak for money
The CBI detained Anil Kumar, an executive of Munitions India Limited, and the chief of SMPP Limited for allegedly selling sensitive defence data in exchange for cash.
The Central Bureau of Investigation has filed a case accusing Anil Kumar, executive director of Munitions India Limited, of accepting bribes to disclose classified defence production and procurement details. The FIR links him to private vendors and to Kansal, the CEO and promoter-director of SMPP Limited, a drone and ammunition manufacturer, over a year-long discussion of a Rs 500 crore ammunition supply contract. SMPP employee Ravit Kumar Tewatia is also named for communicating with Kumar.
Searches of properties in Pune, Mysuru, Bengaluru and Delhi recovered about Rs 1.73 crore and Rs 50 lakh in cash, plus documents that could jeopardise national security. The investigation further claims Kumar funneled the money through his wife and brother, who are now accused of aiding the offence. No comment was obtained from SMPP at the time of reporting.
