CDU dissenters in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern push for possible AfD partnership ahead of state vote
A faction of CDU members in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is urging the party to consider working with the AfD before the upcoming state elections.
Ahead of the state elections in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern-Western Pomerania, a group of CDU rebels is calling for a reassessment of the party’s hard-line opposition to the AfD. District vice-chair Sascha Ott and former Greifswald chairman Axel Hochschild contend that the so-called “fire-wall” policy has not weakened the AfD and has coincided with a decline in CDU support, which recent surveys place at roughly seven percent.
They propose that the CDU remain open to any viable coalition partner, including the AfD, if voters demand it. Party chairman Daniel Peters reiterated the refusal to form coalitions with the AfD or the left, while acknowledging the party’s struggle for survival. AfD regional leader Leif-Erik Holm did not reject the idea of cooperation but said the party would not actively pursue it.
