CDU state premiers delete Chancellor Merz's name from joint support letter
A draft of the CDU’s supporter letter initially listed Chancellor Friedrich Merz, but the final version omitted his name, reportedly angering him.
Eight CDU Minister Presidents drafted a so-called supporter letter that at first named Chancellor Friedrich Merz as a signatory. In the editing process the reference to Merz was struck out, and the final version released to the public does not mention him at all. Sources say the omission left the chancellor angry. Additionally, the letter’s second point was revised: it moved from a wording that excluded certain groups to a statement affirming the CDU’s readiness to cooperate with all democratic forces. The revised document therefore both omits Merz’s name and presents a more inclusive stance on collaboration.
Why it matters
It shows internal tensions within the CDU and a shift toward broader political cooperation.
