Celebrity visits spark surge of American tourists to Greece
High-profile stars such as Madonna, Justin Bieber and Katy Perry have publicised their Greek vacations, prompting a noticeable rise in U.S. visitor numbers.
Recent trips by Madonna, Justin Bieber and Katy Perry, among other celebrities, have been heavily documented on Instagram, providing Greece with extensive free promotion. The Greek prime minister praised Madonna's Corfu celebration, and public broadcaster ERT highlighted the trend as a vote for a Greek summer. Tourism scholars attribute the surge partly to “set-jetting,” with the new Christopher Nolan film The Odyssey showcasing Greek locations and driving bookings up by 18 percent, according to EasyJet Holidays.
American arrivals reached roughly 1.55 million in 2025, making the United States the third-largest source of tourism revenue, while airlines have added roughly 30 percent more seats compared with the previous summer. Direct connections between Athens and the United States hit a record 103 weekly flights in 2026, reflecting the sector’s rapid expansion after years of economic hardship.
