Centennial Lunenburg women's boutique Rudolf’s Ladies Wear to shut its doors

Rudolf’s Ladies Wear, a fixture on Lincoln Street in Lunenburg since the early 1900s, will cease operations later this month. Owner and manager Jane Lordly, who took over the business forty years ago, said she received a property offer she could not refuse and has faced difficulty hiring retail staff. The store’s lineage began in 1908 when C. Ray Lohnes acquired J. Joseph Rudolph’s and renamed it Rudolf’s, later passing to his wife and a long-term manager before Lordly assumed control.

Historically the shop supplied everything from bloomers to bikinis and even white pantyhose for nurses, but competition from online retailers and larger stores in Bridgewater and Halifax has eroded its market. Mayor Jamie Myra, who also runs Stan’s Dad & Lad Shop, recalled childhood visits to Rudolf’s and warned that similar historic shops may soon disappear as tourism-focused galleries and services dominate the downtown. A clearance sale, using the same signage his grandfather employed, is underway as the final inventory is cleared.
