Center-left mayors demand urgent government meeting over cost-of-living crisis and public order

Mayors of major Italian cities wrote to Minister Piantedosi and Deputy Minister Mantovano asking for a prompt meeting to discuss rising living costs and public-order concerns.

Mayors of Italy’s largest cities, all aligned with the center-left, have formally appealed to Interior Minister Piantedosi and Deputy Minister Mantovano for an urgent conference. In their letter they highlighted how the cost-of-living surge is testing municipal resources and fueling unrest across the country. They stressed that the social and generational pact is eroding, demanding action on basic rights such as affordable housing, labor protections and efficient public transport.

The signatories, including Roberto Gualtieri, Sara Funaro, Vito Leccese, Matteo Lepore, Stefano Lorusso, Gaetano Manfredi, Beppe Sala, Silvia Salis and Massimo Zedda, condemned violence and called for collective responsibility from institutions. They argued that pointing fingers will not reduce gasoline prices nor ease existing tensions, and urged the government to convene the mayors without delay.

Why it matters

The letter signals growing pressure on the Italian government to address inflation-driven social strain in major cities.
