Center Party pushes for hospital funding overhaul amid debt-driven budget squeeze

Center Party leader Trygve Slagsvold Vedum demanded extra hospital money in upcoming budget talks, warning that debt repayments are crowding out essential services.

In a televised interview, Center Party leader Trygve Slagsvold Vedum urged the government to allocate additional resources to hospitals during the forthcoming budget negotiations with the Labour Party. He argued that the existing financing structure, which mixes operating costs with debt service for new buildings, forces cuts to ambulance units and nursing positions, particularly affecting regional hospitals. Vedum highlighted that hospitals have paid three billion kroner more in loan repayments than the previous year and proposed separating operating and investment spending as is done elsewhere in the state sector.

Health and Care Minister Jan Christian Vestre conceded that the government had underestimated wage and price growth, leading to under-compensation for hospitals, but maintained that interest payments amount to only 0.3% of hospital budgets, far lower than the three percent seen in municipal sectors. Vestre also warned that simply increasing the budget would not address deeper structural problems and pointed to an upcoming health reform committee report for further guidance.
