A historic Budapest structure, once a girls' high school, now hosts 132 bifacial solar panels that supply around 60% of its energy needs and export excess to the city grid. Green-energy advocate Agnes Szalkai-Lőrincz helped secure the installation, highlighting Hungary's sunny potential despite its reputation for cloudier weather. Renewable output across former Soviet-aligned states has surged about 450% in six years, with Hungary's solar generation climbing from 244 GWh in 2016 to 9,200 GWh today, covering roughly a quarter of its demand.
The shift is fueled by EU climate targets, the loss of Russian fossil imports after the Ukraine war, and substantial COVID-era grants. While Poland and Hungary rank among Europe's fastest-growing solar markets, critics argue past government policies under Viktor Orbán neglected wind development, creating an over-reliance on solar. New Prime Minister Péter Magyar is expected to craft a comprehensive green roadmap as the region continues its “solar revolution.”
