Central Bank of India flags ₹13.97 crore cyber theft, FIR lodged in Mumbai
Central Bank of India reported that ₹13.97 crore was illegally transferred from its RBI settlement account in a series of 187 unauthorized moves, and a police FIR has been filed.
Central Bank of India disclosed that between October 15 and 17, 187 unauthorized transactions moved ₹13.97 crore from its settlement account with the Reserve Bank of India into 36 separate accounts. The bank alleges that unknown actors breached the central SFMS server of Indian Financial Technology and Allied Services (Iftas) by exploiting the SFMS interface of its core-banking system. Only ten of the recipient accounts show up in SFMS logs, and the transaction IDs are absent from the bank’s records.
The FIR filed at Mumbai’s Nodal Cyber Police Station details the daily split of transfers and notes that the bank’s internal systems could not trace the movements. Central Bank of India promptly informed RBI, Iftas, the Daksh portal, NCIIPC and CERT-In, and police have registered a cheating and personation case against the unidentified perpetrators.
Why it matters
