Central Singapore's air quality slips into unhealthy range as haze spreads
On Saturday morning, central Singapore's 24-hour PSI rose to 102, entering the unhealthy bracket, while other regions stayed moderate.
Air quality monitoring on Saturday showed the central part of Singapore reaching an unhealthy 24-hour PSI of 102, while the east, west, south and north stayed within moderate levels of 94, 91, 86 and 76 respectively. Hourly PM2.5 measurements placed the central, eastern and western areas in the elevated band. The National Environment Agency had earlier cautioned that haze from burning in southern Sumatra and Kalimantan might be carried toward the island by southeasterly or southerly winds.
Dry weather was expected to continue, and the agency forecasted the day's overall PSI to hover between moderate and low-unhealthy. Health advisories urged the public, especially vulnerable groups, to limit strenuous outdoor activity when PSI readings are high.
Why it matters
Unhealthy air quality can affect breathing, especially for vulnerable groups, and signals regional haze problems.
