Centre-right clash erupts over Milan mayoral primaries as Salvini backs Lega candidate

The centre-right bloc is at odds over holding primaries for Milan’s mayoral election, with Matteo Salvini pushing a Lega-run vote while Forza Italia warns against solo candidacies.

In a heated Saturday rally on Milan’s periphery, Matteo Salvini and his deputy candidate Silvia Sardone urged the centre-right coalition to let Milan’s voters decide the mayoral nominee through primaries scheduled for the second weekend of November. The move sparked an immediate rebuttal from Forza Italia’s regional secretary Alessandro Sorte, who argued that a Milan-only primary would set a dangerous precedent and warned that the Lega might run independently if no agreement is reached.

The contest also features Defence Under-Secretary Matteo Perego, backed by former mayors Gabriele Albertini and Letizia Moratti, and Maurizio Lupi, the candidate of Noi Moderati. Fratelli d’Italia’s Senate vice-president Licia Ronzulli dismissed primaries as an unsuitable tool for the centre-right, while Senate President Ignazio La Russa pledged to find a compromise, emphasizing the coalition’s historic ability to win uphill battles. The dispute highlights growing tensions within the governing bloc ahead of upcoming municipal elections in Rome and other major cities.
