Centrist Union group secures second-largest bloc in Senate with 63 seats

The Union centriste (UC) parliamentary group has risen to become the Senate's second-largest faction, holding 63 seats, just ahead of the Socialists' 62.

Following the recent renewal of 178 Senate seats, the Union centriste (UC) parliamentary group announced it now commands 63 seats, making it the Senate's second-largest grouping, narrowly surpassing the Socialist bloc's 62 members. The UC, chaired by Hervé Marseille of the UDI, secured three extra seats through post-election negotiations. Among the newly aligned senators are Renaud Muselier, former president of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region who was elected under the Renaissance banner, and Louis Vogel of Horizons, who departed the Les indépendants, république et territoires (LIRT) group.

With this gain, the UC reinforces its role as the second pillar of the governing majority, complementing the 124 Les Républicains senators. The shift underscores a subtle rebalancing of power within the traditionally stable Senate chamber.

Why it matters

The centrist bloc's gain reshapes the Senate's balance, influencing legislative dynamics for the governing majority.
