CERN shifts thousands of accelerator control PCs from Red Hat to Debian Linux
CERN is migrating its underground accelerator control computers from Red Hat-based Linux distributions to Debian, a move projected to cost at least CHF 5.4 million.
CERN announced a large-scale migration of its accelerator-control computers from Red Hat-family Linux to Debian, targeting the “front-end” machines that operate underground. Engineers Federico Vaga and Nikos Tsipinakis detailed how recent changes to Red Hat’s CentOS and RHEL lifecycles would have forced CERN to replace up to 65 % of its hardware due to CPU-architecture constraints. To avoid this, CERN evaluated several distributions and chose Debian despite its poorer integration with existing platforms.
The transition will require redesigning eleven custom boards, hiring additional engineers and technicians, and installing new racks and cabling deep underground, costing at least CHF 5.4 million with only a 20 % chance of success. The effort is backed by Freexian, which will supply Debian ELTS support for Debian 13 and future Debian 15 releases, and is expected to continue through 2033.
