Cernavodă nuclear plant may resume output within weeks as Danube levels rise
Dumitru Chisăliță said the rising Danube water level could allow the Cernavodă nuclear plant to restart its first reactor in roughly two weeks, with the second unit to follow shortly after.
Dumitru Chisăliță, nominated for the Energy Ministry in the Niculescu government, reported that the Danube's water level has begun to increase at the Baziaș crossing, creating conditions for the Cernavodă nuclear plant to restart its first reactor in approximately two weeks. He noted that the second reactor can be brought back into service shortly after the first. The minister emphasized that restoring nuclear output is essential for ensuring a stable electricity supply throughout the cold season.
He also highlighted that the higher river flow will improve operating conditions for Hidroelectrica's hydro plants. Nuclearelectrica confirmed that safety systems remain functional and that the reactors are being maintained under secure conditions while production is paused. The restart will reduce Romania's reliance on alternative sources and imports to cover the shortfall caused by the shutdown.
Why it matters
Restarting the reactors will help secure Romania's winter power supply and reduce reliance on imports.
