Cernavodă nuclear plant to stay offline for at least ten days due to low Danube flow
The Cernavodă nuclear power station will not restart any reactor within the next ten days because the Danube’s water level is insufficient, officials said.
Both reactors at the Cernavodă nuclear facility remain shut because the Danube’s water discharge has fallen to historically low levels, preventing safe cooling. Emil Macovei, Nuclearelectrica’s technical director, stated that the plants cannot be brought back online in the coming ten days due to insufficient water. Cristian Bușoi, the state secretary for the Ministry of Energy, said no definitive restart date is known and that authorities are accelerating dredging operations in the Cernavodă area to improve flow.
The station, which provides about one-fifth of Romania’s dispatchable electricity, was taken offline after the water shortage. Energy system manager Virgiliu Ivan noted that the grid has managed the crisis safely and that the country continues to pursue renewable expansion and storage projects.
